Rick Wilburn was a man on a mission. As the founder of Wilburn Medical Supply, he was used to getting things done. In 2016, he decided to apply that same drive to his health and was committed to a new routine that found him in the gym nearly every day- sometimes twice!

It was a day like any other when Rick stepped onto the treadmill. But mid-stride, the journey took a terrifying turn. Rick’s heart stopped.

For seven minutes, Rick Wilburn was gone.

According to his doctors, those seven minutes should have been the end of his story. But the narrative shifted because of two critical things: an AED defibrillator hanging on the gym wall and a gym employee who had just completed her AED training that very morning.

The HEARTest Yard Congenital Heart Center was created to provide comprehensive care for patients living with congenital heart disease, supporting families from fetal diagnosis through adulthood. The program grew out of the HEARTest Yard initiative founded by former NFL player Greg Olsen and his wife Kara, whose own son was born with a complex congenital heart defect. Their vision was to create a place where families could receive coordinated care and support not only during hospital stays, but also as they navigate life at home after surgery and treatment.

But behind the advanced medical care is another essential layer of support: the social work team led by Jody Cuningham, ensuring families can access and sustain the treatment their children depend on. Nearly 80% of the families served by the cardiac program are economically disadvantaged or reliant on Medicaid. Along with that reality, many face transportation instability, food insecurity, housing challenges, and insurance limitations that complicate access to consistent care.

While about 30% of the program’s patients are adults living with congenital heart conditions, roughly 70% are pediatric patients — many of whom require frequent monitoring and ongoing care to safely manage complex heart conditions. For example, children with valve replacements often need INR monitoring three to four times per week to properly manage anticoagulant medications, making reliable access to care essential.

Jody, who has spent nearly 30 years in social work and the past 12 years building Levine’s cardiac social work program, understands these realities deeply. She has grown her team from one to seven dedicated advocates focused on bridging the gap between what insurance will cover and what families truly need. From securing grant funding for home INR devices that allow safe monitoring without repeated clinic visits, to helping families with gas cards, household bill assistance, and other essential support services, the team operates with a simple mindset: if there is a barrier, find a solution.

When we recently spoke with Jody, she highlighted her reason for continuing to partner with Wilburn Medical Supply: we are mission-aligned and operate as a budget-conscious collaborator willing to work within the realities of grant funding. That includes working within grant timelines, helping stretch limited funding, and thinking creatively alongside her team to solve problems as they arise. Through this partnership, more than 75 families have received critical equipment and supplies that make managing complex cardiac conditions at home safer and more sustainable. What began with PT/INR analyzers has grown to include additional supplies and equipment that help transplant and cardiac patients successfully transition home after procedures and maintain compliance with their care plans. Our work together is just one small piece of the broader impact of the HEARTest Yard initiative, which has helped raise more than $5 million to support programs and services for families affected by congenital heart disease.

  • Key requirements and dates
    August 9, 2026: All state and local government entities must have at least one accessible examination table and one accessible weight scale in use.
  • October 8, 2024: Any MDE purchased or leased by state and local government entities must be accessible, until the required number of accessible tables and scales is met.

At age 49, in 2019, I had a mammogram, and two spots needed a biopsy. They came back as simple calcifications and were nothing to worry about. I had always been an “out of sight, out of mind” person when it came to my health; almost like if I didn’t think about it, then it wouldn’t happen. I was a healthy person other than high blood pressure. I only went to the doctor to have my blood pressure medications refilled. I managed to keep using the “I have no insurance” excuse to not get a mammogram for the next few years. Remember, in my mind, I had no reason for concern because I had felt no lumps, and I had already had benign biopsies.

Jump ahead to the fall of 2022 when a Wilburn Medical USA customer and friend spoke to us about her breast cancer journey. What she said hit me hard, and I knew I needed to get another mammogram, but I kept pushing it out of my mind. A few months after this, in February of 2023, I knew my doctor would insist, so I made a mammogram appointment for the week after my physical. My husband, family, and doctor were shocked but proud of me for finally going. The radiologist found a spot he was unsure about, so I had a biopsy. Everyone, including the doctor who performed the biopsy, felt confident and reassured me it was nothing, but I was scared out of my mind. I contacted my pastor, as well as many other people, to please pray specifically for these results. The day after the biopsy, I got a phone call saying the dreaded words that I had cancer. My world flipped upside down, and I completely fell apart. My work family rallied around me and prayed for healing.

My husband, children, and friends also immediately began praying. The next few days were full of questions, confusion, fear, and prayer. I met my medical team, and my tumor was only .5 cm. We scheduled a lumpectomy. I got myself together and have never felt closer to God. I was ready to fight! I had surgery, and a few weeks later, I began my twenty visits for radiation treatment. I worked every day and left in time to make my radiation appointments late in the afternoon. Radiation is by far the worst physical pain I’ve ever felt. Radiation destroyed my skin for quite a while, and I was miserable. I prayed through the pain, hoping to see God’s purpose. Both my oncologist and surgeon told me that early detection had saved my life. Waiting to find a lump would have been too late without early detection. I knew God had guided me to go to the doctor when I did. I was so thankful.

However, I started feeling a hard lump in the same breast a few months after radiation. I thought it was scar tissue. My medical doctor said the same thing at my annual physical, and she said not to worry. It was now time for my first post-cancer mammogram, and I was nervous. I needed biopsies on two spots in the same breast. I asked if they were where I had felt the lump, and it was. I think, somehow, I knew the outcome because I wasn’t shocked when the biopsies resulted in cancer again.

My family, friends, work family, and I immediately began to pray again for healing. I elected to have a mastectomy without reconstruction because of the risks involved. The pathologist did several extra tests on the tissue in my breast to be sure there was no invasive cancer. Praise God there was no invasive cancer, and I was able to put this behind me. It turns out that this cancer was from the spots that were only calcifications five years earlier. These cells were aggressive enough to survive the radiation.

Please remember that just because something was not a problem years ago doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check on it. I am proof that early detection is vital, and God directs us; we just have to listen. I pray that at least one person who reads this message will get that lifesaving scan. Please don’t let finances or fear hold you back. Remember, knowledge is power, and you can’t fight something you don’t know you have.

Twenty-five years ago, Rick Wilburn channeled his knack for sales, drive to provide for his family, and heart for serving others into the creation of Wilburn Medical USA. Daughter Emily joined the business in 2019 and in 2020 they saw the company's sales quadruple. During the pandemic, Rick Wilburn worked to source PPE and Covid-19 tests. He is on the board of Next Step Ministries. Emily is on the board of Hope Academy and This Redeemed Life.

As a very successful salesperson in the medical industry, Rick believed he could succeed in providing for his family and helping others by starting his own medical distribution company. Emily joined the team in 2019 and purchased majority ownership from her father. Since the transition, the company was certified as a Women-Owned Small Business by WBENC and as a Historically Underutilized Business. Through the Covid-19 pandemic, the company supplied life-saving PPE to medical professionals in need and distributed over 2 million Covid-19 tests.

Leadership and employees came to work daily with passion and ruthless drive to distribute life-saving testing supplies. Their vision united the team as the days were long and regulations were ever-changing.

Emily Wilburn is our majority owner and father Rick Wilburn is the founder, but as Christians, they aim to allow God to lead them as they lead the business. They look to God as their guide, adviser, counselor and leader.

What's the most rewarding aspect of being a family-owned business?

Getting to share the wins and burdens, not just professionally but personally. To see the company and the family flourish is an incredible joy. However, to be there for each other not just after hours, but from 8 to 5 in the hard times makes the support that much more evident and meaningful. We love being there for each other, so carrying that into work is a lovely gift for both of us.

What's the most challenging aspect?

Scheduling and staying on the same page is our greatest challenge. Before Emily joined the team, he could schedule and direct all business initiatives as the only decision maker. However, with the addition of Emily, finding who will take the lead, when and at what pace is challenging.

What's your best advice for other family businesses?

Have fun! It's easy to get bogged down in the weeds and forget you're doing business with someone you love the most. Don't let the day-to-day grind get between your love for your family member. Family matters more than profit at the end of the day. We do our best to operate with that mindset and ensure our employees know and believe that their families come first, too. Give back. Running a business can quickly become a self-serving act, especially as your success grows. Make sure, whether you're just starting or at the height of your business success, that you prioritize service over self. We know our work will be much more rewarding and meaningful if the bottom line doesn't just land in our pockets. We want to share the success and make a difference in our community and world.

What's your favorite family tradition and why?

Our family loves to dance! No matter where we are or what's going on, we're usually ready to bust a move if a good song comes on. We keep our warehouse stereo on at all times and are always down to stop what we're doing and break out our swing steps. So, if you invite us to a work conference, watch out, we will find the music and start the party!

Do you have a succession plan in place? If so, what is it?

Wilburn's succession plan is already in place. Emily is the company's CEO, majority owner, and lead; all day-to-day activity is slowly transferring to her. The Wilburns think of it like an Olympic race when the baton is seamlessly passed from one racer to the next. Emily and Rick run side-by-side in the day-to-day operations, and one day Rick will peel away after running with Emily through their transition of power. Sometimes the transition feels seamless and other times a little rocky, but overall, it's filled with love.

Something about your company that would surprise people?

Wilburn Medical USA was named #30 of the 50 Fastest-Growing Women-Owned and Led Businesses in North America by the Women Presidents Organization. Many would be surprised that a small business in Kernersville could win such a prestigious award, but Wilburn was honored to accept this award and aims to continue on this path of growth and success.

Fifty-six-year-old Rick Wilburn had always been a big guy with a big personality—until a recent doctor’s appointment. His A1C, which indicated he was a diabetic based on blood sugar levels, had skyrocketed.

“I was sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Rick remembers. This realization propelled him to begin a strict fitness and weight-loss regime.

Rick signed up with MyFitnessPal to track his calorie intake, joined a gym, strapped on a Fitbit to record how much he exercised, and followed personal trainer and TV personality Bob Harper’s The Skinny Rules to slim down. In 90 days, he had lost 45 pounds, transitioned from a size 40 to a size 34, and decreased his A1C from 9.2 to 5.9.

The owner of Wilburn Medical USA in North Carolina, Rick was feeling “really good” 100 days into his shape-up. That day, he went to the gym as usual for an aggressive 30-minute workout on the treadmill before heading to work. As he sometimes does, he returned to the gym later that day for round two of his workout.

Pumped up, he decided to run at 7.5 MPH—not his regular 4 MPH—and to decrease his speed by .5 increments every 30 seconds. The last he remembers of his workout is tracking his speed at 6 MPH and being at the same height as the treadmill’s arm rail.

Bianka Raquel Ruiz, a gym supervisor, was in front of the building talking with a member when Rick went down. A coworker rushed outside to get her while another, following gym procedures, ran for the gym’s cell phone behind the desk, called 911, and grabbed the automated external defibrillator (AED) from the wall near a set of exercise equipment.

“When I got there, I saw Rick passed out on a treadmill and a few people were trying to pull him to the floor,” recalls Bianka. “He was blue, and I knew it was serious.”

Bianka immediately started compressions. Then a coworker attached Rick to the ZOLL® AED Plus®. In addition to administering a shock, if necessary, the AED Plus has a Real CPR Help® feature, which provides real-time feedback to rescuers to help them with both depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR.

“The AED helped us through,” says Bianka. “It told us when to start and continue compressions, assessed Rick, and shocked him twice. 

The instructions from the AED were extremely helpful. To be able to listen to an actual voice calmed us down and helped us in this kind of situation, especially when people around us were antsy.”

After his second shock, Bianka heard Rick take a breath. By the time the EMTs arrived, Rick was conscious.

“I knew something had happened,” says Rick. “In the ambulance, the EMT asked me what day it was, and I said, ‘Saturday, and I’m supposed to see the film Miracles to Heaven at 5:45.’ I didn’t think I was going to be one.” At the hospital, Rick received two stents in his “widow maker” artery.

Rick also never imagined that the same equipment—AEDs, he has been selling for 20 years to help others would one day save his life. “The AED saved my life. It’s that simple. 

If not for the AED, I would not be here today, and my daughter would not have a father today. I want to raise awareness of this lifesaving device.” 

He also wants to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of yourself so he can give people hope. “If I hadn’t been in the best shape of my life, I doubt I would be alive. If I can get one person off the couch, that’s what I want to do.” Rick continues to eat well and work out, achieving a personal best recently at a 5K.

Rick now calls each day a “Bonus Day.”
